A 27-year-old worker at a glass factory in southern China has built his own electric sports car, according to a media report.
Chen Yanxi is car buff from Haikou on Hainan Island and built the vehicle in his spare time, China National Radio reported on its website.
He designed the black-and-red vehicle, modelled on the look of super cars, at the beginning of this year and bought most of the parts needed to build the vehicle, including the engine, tyres and transmission system.
The car’s chassis is made of galvanized piping and the exterior from fibreglass.
It cost 30,000 yuan (HK$38,000) to build.
The car featured at an auto show in Hainan this month and drew a lot of attention, according to the report.
Chen will not, however, be able to take his car on the roads as only vehicles made by state-approved manufacturers are deemed eligible to be roadworthy.
He took his car on a test drive on private roads at the car show venue, but was only able to take it up to about 40km/h, the report said.
